Hei,

It’s almost a wrap on 2020, and although this has been a difficult and unexpected year for all, we are proud of what the students and staff at the NFTS have continued to achieve throughout the year. The cameras have continued to roll at the School and students have shot their brilliant graduation films, first year films, live studio shows and created unique video games.

We are delighted that throughout the year, so many industry greats gave their time to talk to our students via Zoom. The first of the lockdown Masterclasses was back in March when David Fincher hosted a private session for our students, talking very candidly about his incredible career. Last week, David delivered a sequel and gave the students an early Christmas present delivering another amazing Masterclass on his newly released film, Mank.

If you have not yet seen our 90 minute compilation film, the NFTS 'Masterclass of Masterclasses', this is still available to watch online. The video features clips from just some of the special guests who very kindly gave our students online Masterclasses during the first lockdown.

Other big names that have been kind enough to give us their time recently include The Third Day director Philippa Lowthorpe, actor and director Viggo Mortensen and Vice President of Google and Head of Stadia Games, Phil Harrison.

We are looking forward to another great year in 2021, where the NFTS will be celebrating its 50th anniversary!

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

New NFTS National Hub in Wales for 2021

We were delighted to recently announce the newest NFTS national hub based at BBC Cymru Wales’s new broadcast centre in Central Square in Cardiff.

NFTS Wales, in partnership with BBC Cymru Wales and Creative Wales, will become operational from April 2021 with enrolment for the first intake of courses starting in Summer 2021.

Following the successful opening of hubs in Glasgow and Leeds in addition to its main site in Beaconsfield, NFTS Wales will focus its activity on supporting very recent graduates to acquire the higher-level skills required to either pursue postgraduate study or to successfully transition into the creative industries.

Jon Wardle, NFTS Director said: “We are thrilled to announce our expansion into Wales. The success of our other hubs, NFTS Scotland and NFTS Leeds have clearly demonstrated the demand for bespoke training and education in the Nations and Regions.

“With the creative industries across Wales thriving, as the UK’s National Film and Television School a key part of our strategy is to support the growth of film and television production outside of London. NFTS Wales will actively seek out and develop Welsh talent and provide students with a clear pathway into jobs within the industry.”

NFTS Model Makers Recreate Miniature Lunar Base from Moon

Every year, students of the NFTS Model Making Course build a replica set from a well-known film. For 2020, John Lee, NFTS Head of Model Making for Animation Diploma tasked his new cohort of model makers with replicating the interior of the ‘Sarang’ Lunar Base from the BAFTA winning sci-fi film Moon. Moon is a movie with a special place in John Lee’s heart, having created many of the model miniatures used in the original film, made at Shepperton Studios in 2009. Starring Sam Rockwell, the film was directed by Duncan Jones who joined the students via Zoom to help the students with their project brief!

The students were challenged with building a 1:8 scale miniature version of the Lunar Base, complete with practical lighting, props and a colossal amount of onset graphics, all in just five weeks.

At the NFTS, many different courses collaborate together and the Moon brief was combined with the NFTS Digital Effects MA course, incorporating their Motion Capture and Motion Control workshops to create an exciting promo sequence from the film.

See the results of this exciting project on our website and on our social media channels.

The running theme of the second year of the course is: ‘one year, one student, one game.’ Each project is testament to the sheer amount of incredible hard work, attention to detail and creative storytelling our students have dedicated to their craft.

NFTS Animation Film selected for Sundance Film Festival 2021

We are thrilled that 2019 graduate animation film The Fire Next Time, has been selected for the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, the only UK animated short to be included.

The atmospheric and powerful seven minute film by Directing Animation MA graduate Renaldho Pelle was inspired by the 2011 London riots, blending hand painted character animation with stylised stop motion sets built to a scale of 1:50 by students of the Model Making for Animation Diploma.

The Sundance Film Festival will run online from 28th January to 3rd February 2021 with The Fire Next Time one of only three UK shorts screened. A total of just 50 ‘bold and creative’ shorts were selected by the Sundance Jury with 9,000 entries submitted from all over the world.

Head of Directing Animation, Robert Bradbrook said: “We're very proud that The Fire Next Time has been selected for the Sundance Film Festival. The film follows an NFTS tradition of using animation to explore tricky subjects and exposing them to a wider audience.

Through his gestural brush-strokes, combined with the brutalist model sets of London estates, Renaldho beautifully captures the tensions in his neighbourhood that led to the 2011 riots. While the film was often difficult in the making, the final results highlight the outstanding teamwork within the production and a director who never gave up on his vision.”
