Edition 3, 2011

Dear Alumni

It's our busiest time of year here in the Alumni Office with graduation ceremonies coming to a close and new graduates joining our network. This year's graduation ceremonies were highly successful and as inspiring as ever, with not only 3000 students graduating but with some well known names joining out Honorary Hall of Fame - a highlight being Steve Cram presenting fellow athlete Seb Coe with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters,

We have also been busy with our international alumni members. We have been recruiting Alumni Ambassadors to represent us in their countries. Through our Ambassador Terese Mbama we completed our first annual reunion in Nigeria.

Thank you to all of you who also contacted us with your Where Are You Now stories for our annual Bridge magazine. Although we could not feature you all, we would like you to be assured that your time and efforts are greatly apperciated.

Alumni Member of the Year

Every year we ask you to nominate who you think is our 'Alumni Member of the Year'. After stiff competition this year's winner is Katy McLean. Katy not only graduated again this summer with a Postgraduate Certificate in the Graduate Teacher Programme, she also led the Women's England Rugy Union Team to the World Cup Final. For her commitment to education and her personal achievements in sport, Katy was this year presented with the award at the graduation ceremonies.

Hello from Nigeria!

The University of Sunderland Alumni Association recently asked alumni members to become Ambassadors to represent us in their countries.

Terese Mbama became our first International Alumni Ambassador and she will help spread our message in Nigeria. We held our first reunion in Lagos on Saturday 30th July and we were thrilled that so many Nigerian Alumni Members wanted to take part. Hear from Terese about the event.

In an English Country Garden..

The Sunderland Old Student Teachers' Society are one of the Alumni Association's most loyal Chapters.

Each year the Alumni Association take a 'school trip' with the old teachers to one of the North East's amazing tourist spots. This year we went Crook Hall and Gardens in Durham City. Read about the trip or discover more about the Sunderland Old Student Teachers' Society.

Norwegian Friends come back to Sunderland after 35 years

The Alumni Association organise reunions on a regular basis. However when we were approached by Vidar Aarvold we knew this would be a special occasion. Vidar and his fellow engineering friends wanted to come back and visit Sunderland after 35 years.

The group came back to Sunderland for a long weekend and we organised for them to see old haunts and new developments. After meeting with University dignatories the group went to see our award-winning AMAP centre and then saw the New Sciences Complex. Over lunch the group were quizzed by the press and their trip even made the news!

If you have a special graduation date coming up...why not get in touch!

Can you help with 'Students Futures'?

Did you have a great student experience and would now like to enhance someone else’s time at University? The Alumni Association and Employer Engagement Team are embarking on a new trial mentoring scheme and we would love your help.

We are looking for 50 Student Mentors to advise on employability i.e. what skills are needed in the workplace. As a Mentor you would be assigned 3 first year students and would commit to having one conversation with them a term on employability.

If you are an employer, what are you looking for in a new recruit with regards to their transferable skills, their works experience etc.

As a graduate, what skills do you feel you were lacking when entering the workplace and looking back, what would have you done differently?

It's not about writing their CV for them, it’s just a friendly face that they can turn to, to encourage them to raise their own employability levels.

If you feel you could help, please email us!

We hope you have enjoyed this edition. If you would like to contribute to the next edition, please email us.

Keep in touch!

Om meg

Bildet mitt
