10 Sweet Facts for Halloween
Here's a little conversation fodder you can pass out on Monday along with the fun size candy bars:
1. Remember the Seinfeld episode where a Junior Mint falls into the open chest cavity of a patient? M&M's and Life Savers turned down the show before the Junior Mints people signed on. No money changed hands.
2. The 3 Musketeers originally included three smaller bars: one vanilla, one chocolate and one strawberry. (Hence the name.) When the ingredients became too costly during World War II, the 3 Musketeers became a single chocolate bar.
3. Toblerone is a portmanteau of the creator's name, Theodor Tobler, and "torrone," an Italian word for a type of nougat.
4. The M&M in M&M's stand for Mars and Murrie.
5. Until the early 1930s, the Sugar Daddy caramel candy was called the Papa Sucker. (Probably not a good idea to repeat this one on Halloween.)
6. The name PEZ (as in PEZ Dispensers) comes from the German word for peppermint - PfeffErminZ.
7. In the 1930s, Admiral Byrd brought 2½ tons of NECCO Wafers to the South Pole for his men during their two-year stay.
8. Though the bottles didn't fit in trick-or-treat bags, Life Savers soda was launched in the 1980s.
9. Kit Kat flavors available in Japan include wine, sweet potato, wasabi, and soy sauce.
10. Chocolate magnate Milton Hershey had reservations on the Titanic. He ended up taking a different ship.
