Hei,

The momentum in the streets has not stopped, and neither can we. All over the country cities are coming to terms with the fact continuing to put money in to already bloated police budgets is not keeping people safer. In DC where we have the highest number of police per capita in the country, the homicide rate continues to soar. Increasing the number of police, paying senior officers two salaries, and flooding neighborhoods with police presence has done nothing to reduce violence or homicide in DC. A recent ACLU DC report showed that between July 22, 2019 and December 31, 2019 MPD made 62,000 stops (1 stop every 4 minutes). Only 0.6% of all stops, and only 1.6% of non-traffic stops, led to the seizure of guns. To be clear, despite the large number of stops, the mayor’s own report noted that violent crimes increased 4% over the five-month period.

On Tuesday July 7th, the first budget vote will take place, and we’re demanding that councilmembers acknowledge how they’ve disregarded their constituents in the process thus far. They must defund MPD, and vote ‘no’ on the budget or resign.
DC Councilmembers are not listening to what thousands of people have been demanding. Over 16,000 people have testified to DefundMPD and invest in the community, and over 5,000 people have signed our petition. Organizers have been visiting Charles Allen, Elissa Silverman, Vincent Gray, and other DC politicians to keep applying pressure around defunding the MPD budget, and it’s not over.

Here are some ways you can plug in:

Join us for a weekend of action calling on councilmembers to defund MPD or resign. We’ll be meeting up every evening this Saturday through Monday (see graphic above)

Ask three of your friends to sign the petition and join us in taking action!

Om meg

Bildet mitt
