Hei,

ERIKA --
The uprisings in all 50 states in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Nina Pop, Tony McDade, and countless other Black people at the hands of the state and vigilantes, are among a long legacy of uprisings and Black radical traditions.
Tomorrow, Juneteenth, represents a critical moment in Black history where centuries of revolts and uprisings gave way to freedom and, through our own efforts, every Black person was liberated.
Black people have celebrated Juneteenth since the late 1800s. It marks the day that the last formerly enslaved people found out they had earned their freedom -- in Galveston, Texas. It marked a new beginning for our ancestors, one that laid the foundation for where we are today.
This day marks an opportunity to be in community with one another and to reflect on the important role of building power for ourselves. It is an opportunity to value and honor the lives of Black people and our contributions to progress over the last 400 years.
Our ancestors fought hard for their freedom, and the global uprisings are evidence that we are still fighting. We are inspired by those who ignited this flame for liberation and refused to give up -- and we take our cues from their commitment to the fight.
This Juneteenth, in honor of the ongoing fight for freedom and justice, join one of the events below, or commit to celebrating in your own way:
Nationwide: M4BL is organizing Six Nineteen events across the nation for black lives
Philadelphia: “Jawnteenth” Juneteenth Celebration with Black Lives Matter Philadelphia

Memphis: Virtual Juneteenth Celebration with Black Lives Matter Memphis
Chicago: Defund the Cook County Jail with Black Lives Matter Chicago
South Bend: #DefundThePolice: what it means and how to do it online event with Black Lives Matter South Bend
No matter how you celebrate or observe Juneteenth -- make sure you take time to care for yourself and your loved ones.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter Global Network
P.S. If you haven’t already, sign our petition to finally make Juneteenth a national holiday.
